Book Review "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami |

⚠️TW: lots of s*exual content, including "underage" one, violence against animals, slight gore.

Ta-da! Long awaited post on Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami.

I've got many things to say about this book and at the same time - very little, cause enough was said already:

- I see why it appeals to western public and became popular among non-readers - there is this eerie atmosphere with angsty teenage boy on the run, searching for meaning of life, destiny, freedom.

Kafka - the protagonist - thinks he must become stronger in order to overcome everything that comes ahead. One might probably recognize themselves in their youth, the desperation to prepare and always it's not enough.

- another subplot criticises society for double standards. A little bright boy Nakata falls into comma back in 1940s and then wakes up with half of his memories lost. Thus he's treated like a broken man, although he's head and mind are perfectly fine, since he learned himself who to adapt and meet expectations. Along the journey he meets a driver, who never had enough time to strive for more - another character for a common reader to sympathize with.

I genuinely enjoyed following both of these stories, at the same time noticing little inconveniences, which probably helped readers back in 2003 to love it more. I'll dwell on it in the next part of the review.

So far I consider reading what was mentioned in this story:

- Franz Kafka "The Metamorphosis", "The Trial", "The Castle"
- Natsume Soseki "The Miner", "Sanshiro"

If you search more, you'll see that these authors are heavily influenced by European culture. And Haruki Murakami himself lived and studied many years abroad.

 - I love books that provide context within the text about local culture. But this book is practically flexing with knowledge about European classical music & physolophy, Russian literature and vintage movies, to the point these references outweight the the obvious refferences to Japanese literature, culture, music. It sounded extremely forced at times.

- This book is filled with brands and refferences: KFC, McDonald's, Nescafé, the tea is specifically Earl Grey, a shirt is specifically from Ralph Lauren, which irritated me by the end

- This book is extremely sexual and men-centered with only exuse being 'it's written by a man from a boy's perspective' - like, I get it, I've read other mundanely sexual books before, but in here it was irritating. Why every unviersal discovery has to involve a strong desire for a woman and at the same time I am, as a cis-woman, supposed to sympathize. And with whom? A boy or a man, who's reactions I'll never understand, or a woman, who's being a tool? It's not exactly everywhere in this book, but this idea needs to be said outloud.

If I were to explain this book, I'd tell it like this: there is the world of calmness and fulfillsness, where you have nothing to strive for and thus there is no need for memory; and the Kafka's world - world of fighting, achiving, getting stronger to overcome fate. The conclusion here sounds like this: the real world is an in-between one, it ain't perfect, but you're still able to find happiness within it.
